The goal of the company is to bridge business applications with various types of enterprise blockchain networks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The starting point for this freelance project was a <strong>high fidelity prototype<\/strong> built as a technical demo. The prototype had <strong>not been sufficiently validated<\/strong> with relevant parties, even though there were plans to build even more functionality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column\">\n<div class=\"su-spoiler su-spoiler-style-fancy su-spoiler-icon-plus su-spoiler-closed\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\" data-anchor-in-url=\"no\"><div class=\"su-spoiler-title\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\"><span class=\"su-spoiler-icon\"><\/span> More background on the team:<\/div><div class=\"su-spoiler-content su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\"> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>The team had been doing personalized consultancy and implementation work in enterprise blockchain for years. By working <strong>across organizations and industries<\/strong>, they had identified some <strong>common challenges<\/strong> and a value proposition to support their partners by <strong>automating certain integration tasks<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>While Unchain.io had <strong>strong technical skills in-house<\/strong>, the <strong>design expertise<\/strong> was not built within the team and was <strong>outsourced to freelancers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>In addition, the predominant attitude was to show the product for feedback only &#8220;when it is ready&#8221;, <strong>not a moment earlier.<\/strong> This could be due to wanting to defend one&#8217;s own work from <strong>criticism<\/strong> and to not damage one&#8217;s <strong>reputation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> <\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"alignwide has-text-align-left\" id=\"DesignChallenge\">The Design Challenge<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns alignwide\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column\">\n<p>The freelance project was scoped around the <strong>usefulness and usability<\/strong> of the digital platform. It must serve the users (beginners as well as experts) in achieving objectives set forward by their organizations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Secondary goal: investigating the creation of a <strong>marketplace<\/strong> for modular software integrations. This would involve encouraging the re-use of software created by other organizations.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"alignwide\" id=\"Research\">Appendix 1. across coding languages, frameworks and networks<\/p><cite>Simplified Definition<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<ul id=\"block-65886df4-7b61-430a-8333-8d3e81773d7b\"><li>Integration Developers are great problem solvers, but only within well defined problem constraints<\/li><li>In the very dynamic and competitive software industry, they value improvements which make them more efficient.<\/li><li>Like to stick to the tools that are proven to work well for them- unless peers or company processes lead them to rethink their methods<\/li><li>Pro-tip: Stimulate their problem solving and watch their path, then in a future design, build in and facilitate the unexpected approaches they took and scaffold them with signifiers and constraints.<\/li><\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns alignwide are-vertically-aligned-center\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center\">\n<p><br>Altough an <strong>integration developer (User) <\/strong>has to work with the constraints set by <strong>management<\/strong>, he has a say over the tools and work processes that are to be used. This is where technology integrators\/providers play a role of <strong>orchestrator<\/strong>, as well as <strong>facilitator<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Without <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.deloitte.com\/us\/en\/insights\/focus\/signals-for-strategists\/emergence-of-blockchain-consortia.html\">consortia<\/a> (a commitment to share and coordinate) there is no interoperability, data sharing or collaboration, there is limited added value.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Update (2021)<\/strong> &#8211;<strong> <\/strong>At the time of the project, MS Azure (now <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/consensys.net\/quorum\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/consensys.net\/quorum\/\" target=\"_blank\">Quorum<\/a>) and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/aws.amazon.com\/blockchain\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/aws.amazon.com\/blockchain\/\" target=\"_blank\">Amazon AWS Blockchain<\/a> did not have their integration offerings as developed as they are nowadays. Understanding how it would have impacted our Value Proposition shows the importance of Trendspotting, Forecasting and Design Strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"Orchestration\">Appendix 2. This cannot be achieved simply through discussion or debate. This is an advantage due to the promise of simplicity, reliability and time to market. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>priority during this Design<\/strong> would be to <strong>validate<\/strong> whether the potential partners would step on board to upload and download these components, and <strong>under which circumstances<\/strong>. Another goal was to investigate what <strong>elements of a marketplace we missed<\/strong> (unknown unknowns).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>A rapid and simple way to prototype beyond &#8220;acting out interactions during co-creation workshops&#8221;, would be by using a framework that had solved the various challenges of creating a marketplace:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>interaction sequences designed to <strong>build trust and reliability<\/strong>; <\/li><li>the visual elements that are meant to inspire <strong>clarity and confidence<\/strong>;  <\/li><li>the <strong>processes behind the surface<\/strong> (vetting, validation, payments) and the <strong>technical backbone<\/strong> to keep it working  <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>A <strong>prototype <\/strong>was<strong> built<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/woocommerce.com\/\">WooCommerce<\/a> &#8211; WP), <strong>demonstrated<\/strong> and discussed, but this article will not describe it in any more detail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4>The case for a flexible Marketplace<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sharetribe.com\/products\/flex\/\">Sharetribe<\/a> allows companies to build a marketplace that is uniquely theirs, at<strong> a fraction of the cost of a custom-build<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In many ways <strong>Sharetribe <\/strong>is doing to the <strong>marketplace landscape<\/strong> what <strong>Unchain <\/strong>is to the <strong>blockchain landscape<\/strong>. Their <strong>expertise <\/strong>and <strong>educational material<\/strong> in community building, human psychology, interface validation and building trust made the team consider a partnership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/mariusgursu.files.wordpress.com\/2020\/02\/gif-sharetribe.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"512\"\/><figcaption>Sharetribe &#8211; a framework for creating marketplaces<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4>A new perspective on building it<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The collaboration with Sharetribe would show what a human-driven mindset achieves. The Marketplace functionality would be <strong>accelerated<\/strong>, and the creation of it would not be a <strong>technical challenge <\/strong>but a <strong>community building<\/strong> and <strong>trust creation <\/strong>exercise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It would allow for <strong>design sprints<\/strong> in which the developers would <strong>not be asked to code<\/strong>, but to <strong>fake it and find shortcuts<\/strong>. To be required to <strong>place themselves in the shoes of the users<\/strong> &#8211; <strong>instead of asking technical questions<\/strong> regarding feasibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"su-spoiler su-spoiler-style-fancy su-spoiler-icon-plus su-spoiler-closed\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\" data-anchor-in-url=\"no\"><div class=\"su-spoiler-title\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\"><span class=\"su-spoiler-icon\"><\/span>All successful marketplaces are Co-Created (intentionally or not)<\/div><div class=\"su-spoiler-content su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\">\n\n\n\n<p><br>Following the prototyping of the Marketplace functionality, the perspective had shifted to <strong>include the Marketplace <\/strong>toward future user test and <strong>co-creation sessions<\/strong>. This large change in functionality covers too many assumptions (with impact over the vision of the service offering), which need to be reality tested early with the target audience in a Co-creation fashion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Offering a marketplace comes with a requirement for extra capability and talent, meaning that <strong>energy should be budgeted to build these abilities <\/strong>as soon as possible. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Finally, the option of <strong>building on top of  turn-key solutions<\/strong> (e.g. Sharetribe, supporting and simplifying interaction + technical aspects) was seen as preferable compared to building a marketplace from scratch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"OrgChange\">Appendix 3. Organizational change<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-extra-large-font-size\"><em><strong>This is an Appendix, I recommend seeing the <em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/mariusursu.com\/index.php\/portfolio\/connecting-business-and-blockchain-networks\/\" target=\"_blank\">Visual and Short version \ud83d\udd17<\/a>.<\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Transforming an organization (even a small one) such that it embodies Design Thinking or Service Design<strong> is a project in itself<\/strong>, and it was not the explicit goal stated in the initial Design Brief. However, changes in operations were required to make space for Design&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some things that are part of this effort were: creating <strong>design ambassadors<\/strong> at key levels in the organization who speak up or decide at key moments and meetings; organizing design jams\/ <strong>sprints<\/strong>\/ sessions, not for their deliverables, but for the <strong>mindset they develop<\/strong> + preparation they require + agreement they stimulate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>Create design ambassadors who speak up at meetings and act within the organization often and early, when projects are still defined and scoped<\/p><cite>Key insight<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3>Making space for Service Design<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"NewProcess\">A new process<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>When attempting behavior change, a good way make it lasting is by &#8220;making it easier&#8221; &#8211; organizing the incentives and processes in such a way that <strong>the new way becomes the common sense thing to do<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>process <\/strong>described below is <strong>meant to be a guideline<\/strong> and to be customized. class=\"su-spoiler-content su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\">\n\n\n\n<p><br>The <strong>prioritization <\/strong>of findings into design opportunities takes place with the consideration of 4 main criteria:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>Their&nbsp;<strong>overall impact<\/strong>&nbsp;on the entire journey<\/p><p>Their&nbsp;<strong>emotional effect<\/strong>&nbsp;on the user (anxiety, stress, confusion, etc.)<\/p><p>The&nbsp;<strong>ability to control and improve<\/strong>&nbsp;this part of the journey (who \u2018owns\u2019 this journey phase?)<\/p><p><strong>The desire to innovate<\/strong>: &#8220;do we want to apply best practices or be an industry leader in a particular matter?&#8221;<\/p><cite>Source: <a aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Customer support is important for building the right thing<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A common frame of mind is <em>&#8220;we will hire customer support when we need them, when we have sufficient customers&#8221;<\/em>. However, this misses an important point:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If offering <strong>customer service<\/strong>, support, guides and documentation is <strong>not a priority<\/strong> for the team, user <strong>frustration is not addressed<\/strong> at the right moment, and so those <strong>feedback points are not captured<\/strong> (gold for the design process).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/mariusgursu.files.wordpress.com\/2020\/02\/flow-of-empathy.png\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Flow of empathy &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thisisservicedesigndoing.com\/\">TISDD <\/a>Ch. 9.2.7<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Building on top of the &#8220;transfer of empathy&#8221; concept &#8211; it is important that documentation and support sometimes be given by the <strong>same people who are developing<\/strong>, people which are normally not in customer facing roles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"su-spoiler su-spoiler-style-fancy su-spoiler-icon-plus su-spoiler-closed\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\" data-anchor-in-url=\"no\"><div class=\"su-spoiler-title\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\"><span class=\"su-spoiler-icon\"><\/span>Reflection -the relevance of a Participative approach:<\/div><div class=\"su-spoiler-content su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\">\n\n\n\n<p><br>The <strong>value of deliverables<\/strong> is in: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>the knowledge they collect and present; <\/li><li>team alignment they create; <\/li><li>discussions and actions they stimulate or make possible;<\/li><li>process steps they make us go through.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><br>It is important to do these work-products collaboratively <strong>with the team<\/strong> in planned sessions, to build <strong>shared understanding<\/strong>. Even if the findings themselves are not novel as a whole; they to create a habit out of <strong>making space for human centered design<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Involving <strong>outside stakeholders<\/strong> is more difficult to arrange, but will always <strong>result in reality-checks<\/strong>&#8230; It is difficult because these sessions require more intense preparation, must account for sensitivity about confidential information and require more process steering because the participants have wider ranging goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Working with outsiders also involves the ability to tell when an idea <strong>requires validation<\/strong> and contribution VS when<strong> it is too fresh <\/strong>and intangible to be understood for any useful feedback to occur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>I am grateful to<\/em><br><em> Jelle who made space for Design and Learning, <\/em><br><em>and Thatcher for being a Design Ambassador.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>Thanks for taking the time<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This article adds more detail to the points which I touched on in the Visual and Short version \ud83d\udd17.
